River Oaks
If Houston had its own version of Beverly Hills, it would be River Oaks. This chic and luxurious neighborhood is located between the bustling Galleria area and the artsy Montrose neighborhood. It is home to some of the most gorgeous homes, trendy restaurants and activities the Bayou City has to offer.
Eat
River Oaks is heaven for foodies offering every type of cuisine imaginable, and even yes, a cupcake vending machine. Head to Local Foods for a casual lunch outside, or if you’re looking for something fancier, Steak 48 serves some of the best steaks in town. In the River Oaks Shopping Center, Brasserie 19 offers French fare and a fun brunch menu while La Griglia is the place to go for fresh seafood or a big bowl of pasta. If you are looking for upscale American food, visit State of Grace or Frank’s Americana Revival where the fried chicken always hits the spot.
Stay
River Oaks tends to be a mainly residential and shopping area so if you are looking for a place to rest your head, you may need to look closer to the Galleria area. The two options closest to River Oaks are the swanky St. Regis with a full-service spa and pool, and the modern Hotel Derek with chic décor and prime location less than 0.1 miles from The Galleria.
Play
When visiting River Oaks, just be warned that your wallet will most likely take a beating. Between the River Oaks Shopping Center, Highland Village and the new River Oaks District, there is something for everyone. The latter features high-end stores like Cartier, Dior and Stella McCartney, while the other two are home the places like Apple, Crate and Barrel, and lululemon.
Craving a little culture? Visit the Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens, the former home of philanthropist and Houstonian Ima Hogg, or take in an independent film at the historic Landmark River Oaks Theatre that hosts midnight showings of cult movies as well. Or visit a local Houstonian favorite, the Beer Can House constructed from beer cans, bottles and other paraphernalia.
