Best Places for Brunch in Houston

Some of our favorite establishments for mimosas and migas

Ah, brunch. That great gay pastime. Sure, everyone enjoys a good mimosa now and then. But really does anyone take this weekend meal—a veritable homage to eggs and gossip—as seriously as we do? Whether you seek a relaxed bistro to enjoy French toast and coffee or an up-tempo hotspot where bellinis flow all Sunday afternoon, Houston is a treasure trove of fantastic eateries to “do brunch." And many of these places are in the Montrose area, home to H-Town’s own gayborhood. Here are a few highlights.

El Tiempo 1308 Annex
We love our Mexican food in H-Town and El Tiempo 1308 Annex is a great place to get it AND be in the heart of where the action. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. The service is super fast and accommodating – even if you like to tweak the menu items a bit. Another Houston classic for recovering from Saturday and revving up to enjoy Sunday.

Baba Yega
Even if the atmosphere wasn’t inviting – which it certainly is – it would be worth it to brunch at Baba Yega just for the massive Saturday brunch buffet and the equally impressive Sunday brunch menu. And the menu is not only huge, it’s also wildly diverse and includes lots of vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options. They also have an impressive array of wine and beer and mimosas. Oh, the mimosas. Honestly, you could show up just for those.

Baby Barnaby's
All they do is breakfast so they do it really well. Really well. Scrambles, pancakes, waffles, hash, even a lovely yogurt. The staff is super friendly and accommodating and you’ll find an ease here that will keep you coming back time and again. It’s a great place for a simple brunch for two or for gathering the gang to catch up on the week, recover from the weekend, and recharge for the week to come.

Tout Suite
Brunch here is simple and classic. Bagels and lox. Avocado toast. Chia pudding. And – oh, yes, please – the beloved Brazilian acai bowl. Sometimes you want to keep it simple and Tout Suite is a great place to do that. The drink menu is right to the point too - red sangria, white sangria, mimosas, berry bellinis, and the michelada Bueno. Really, what more could a weekend morning possibly need?

Max’s Wine Dive
Fried chicken and champagne. It’s their slogan. But it’s also a very good idea. Hardly a better way to tackle a brunch craving. The vibe is friendly and low key. And their B.E.L.T. will make you weak in the knees. Ask for the DIY mimosas and get a bottle of champagne and carafes of OJ and cranberry juice. Bring your friends and settle in. The only thing harder than deciding what to order is deciding when to head back out into the real world!

Gloria’s
Houston was one happy city in June of 2012 when they finally got a Gloria’s to call their own. Think Salvadorian and Mexican making nice in the kitchen. From Migas, Huevos con Calabasitas, and Chilaquiles to Sopes, Huevos con Papas, and Huevos con Chorizo, the menu has more choices then you’ll likely be able to manage pre-coffee. Of course, you might not want to bother with coffee when Gloria’s Pomegranate Mimosas, Mango Mimosas, Bloody Marys, and Micheladas are on the menu. Gloria’s is an H-Town gay fave for kicking off Sunday Funday.

B & B
You can’t talk about B & B Butchers without talking about the super cool location. B & B resides in the Dittman Bakery building built in 1924. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped across the pond and back in time at the combo butcher shop/restaurant. You can buy gorgeous meats here. You can indulge in a decadent steak dinner here. But what you won’t want to miss is brunching it up here. Burgers, hash, surf & turf quesadillas, and – oh yes please – monkey bread. Call an Uber. Trust us.

Inevitably you’ll develop a few favorites, the standbys where you and your friends love to gather and kvetch.  But the great thing is when you’re ready to shake things up—a little migas or maybe a Bloody Mary bar—the food gods of "Bayou City" provideth. See you there!
