Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum! If you can’t squeeze in a tropical vacay this summer, don’t worry. Houston has you covered. Our favorite city has plenty of bars that offer all the fruity cocktails and laid-back atmosphere you could want without setting foot on a plane. We’ve found some of the best around, so grab your fellow rum enthusiasts and escape to one of these local tropical paradises.

Lei Low

Lei Low is a slice of Hawaii in the Bayou City. This Heights area rum bar’s nautical and tropical theme will transport you to an island oasis, complete with wicker chairs and booth seating in sea foam green. In terms of drinks, Houstonians love saying, “Aloha!” to their signature Planter’s Punch or many other classic tiki cocktails with a Southern twist.

Under the Volcano

Walking into this West University hotspot is like walking into an old-fashioned beach bar on a tropical island. Colorful masks adorn the wooden walls with outdoor seating and wooden barstools and tables all around. An expansive cocktail menu features an emphasis on vibrant Latin American flavors with fresh squeezed juices and fresh herbs. With weekly happy hours and live music, Under the Volcano offers something for everybody.

High and Dry

For a modern take on a tiki bar, this downtown hangout offers all the syrupy drinks without a lot of the cliché décor. Exposed brick and hardwood floors run the length of the bar and give a hip, downtown vibe with just a few strategic tiki statues hinting its tropical menu. Tasty Hurricanes and Mai Tais are served at their daily happy hours, as well as a selection of more than 50 types of rum.

Kanaloa

Kanaloa is the new tiki bar taking over Market Square downtown. With more than 100 rum labels on the menu, this Polynesian-inspired playground offers an array of signature cocktails and classic favorites. With an upstairs and large patio, this is the perfect bar to enjoy with a group, sipping on yummy umbrella cocktails while taking in the Houston sun.
