The Toasted Coconut

Be transported to a tropical locale without even leaving the Houston area. Husband and wife duo Martin and Sara Stayer, of Nobie’s Restaurant, have created a tiki-inspried oasis with clean lines and a mix of neutral and bright colors. There is even an adult sandbox the adds to the island flare and offers a playful addition unlike anything else in Houston. The Toasted Coconut’s menu has been inspired by the 20th parallel north (India, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Mexico, Cuba) and combines smaller “tiki-bites” along with larger dishes for patrons to mix and match. The spread includes mapo frito, thai crispy rice, and a variety of skewers and dumplings, as well as specialties like eggplant in vadouvan curry and a spicy Grandma’s fried chicken that packs quite a punch. Cocktail aficionado Sarah Troxwell is shaking up low ABV and balanced cocktails with an emphasis on her love of rum. For those looking to get really toasted, we suggest the Jamaica Me Crazy, (lime vodka, hibiscus, cherry and Topo Chico) or the Sherry Sells Seashells by The Seashore, (reposado tequila, manzanilla sherry, apricot, bitters), all served in vintage tiki mugs, coconuts or glassware. The Toasted Coconut is open Wednesday through Monday from 4 p.m. to midnight.
