January 2005 saw the rise in Houston of women's flat track roller derby. Run for the skaters by the skaters, Houston Roller Derby (HRD) was inspired by the nation-wide revival of roller derby as an athletic sport. HRD has its bouts on the third Saturday of each month from March through September in its new home at Kicks Indoor Soccer & Gym near the Heights.
