Houston’s Washington Avenue area continues to evolve into a foodie destination, making room for the first neighborhood Indian concept, Surya India, in fall 2016. Created by chef-owner Sheel Joshi, the contemporary spot is a relaunch of the restaurateur’s original west coast operation, which shuttered due to the rising cost of rent in Los Angeles.
Today, hints of Joshi’s original outpost trickle into the cozy Houston interior in everything from a signed Tina Turner photo to Michelin guide recs. Go for carryout service or grab a seat inside and expect offerings like crunchy turkey or veggie samosas, classic tandoori and biriyani dishes, as well as flavorful curries and vegetarian specialties. Save room for cardamom-tinged rice pudding that’s not-to-be-missed.
Surya India is open for lunch, Tuesday through Sunday, and dinner Tuesday through Saturday.
