Shun Japanese Kitchen brings “true izakaya” to Lower Kirby.

Local 2nd generation Japanese chef Naoki Yoshida, his wife Renee and his team, have created a Houston specific Japanese restaurant. Shun is customized for Houston by using Japanese ingredients with local inspiration using sustainable products.

On the menu? Innovation. Diners can look forward to dishes ranging from toro tartare and dumplings stuffed with carnitas to the restaurant’s take on kakigori, a Japanese shaved ice dessert, topped with sake syrup. At the sushi bar, diners will find smoked uni, bruleed toro (tuna belly) and a “DIY sushi” platter that allows sushi enthusiasts to assemble their own handrolls.

Traditional meets modern inside, with traditional Japanese decor and pops of modern graffiti.

Shun is open for dinner Tuesday through Saturday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.
