Mind and Body
Don’t worry if you’ve already slipped up on your new year’s resolution; 2020 is the year we see who we are just as clearly as who we strive to be. Cherish both of these versions of yourself and release stress by meditating with guidance at Discovery Green or, for the new and expecting moms out there, visit Project Row Houses on January 4th to attend Mommies, Movement, and Meditation. If you like even more interaction, then try Yoga + Sound Healing to engage both the body and mind on January 9th. If the thought of yoga sounds exhausting, further enrich your mind through inspirational literature by shopping at Brazos Bookstore.
Science, Arts, and Culture
After connecting to the self, connect to the wider world by exploring the diversity of culture that Houston has to offer. Visit Teo Chew Temple, Czech Cultural Center, Asia Society Texas Center or Houston Museum of African American Culture to better understand the world through a variety of cultural experiences. Further your understanding of others by observing a wide array of artistic expression through our vast museum district. Visit the Lawndale Art Center to see contemporary works focused on Houston natives. Get in on the ground floor by attending their Winter Opening Reception on January 17th. To continue with the dynamic art experience, view the current installations at Contemporary Arts Museum Houston. While there, explore interactive workshops, such as Journal Making on January 4th, and collage your way to better understanding of yourself. After you’re collaged out, stroll over to the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and the Cullen Sculpture Garden to view art that lasts the ages. If you’re scintillated by the sciences, take a trek through Houston Museum of Natural Science’s expansive Moran Paleontology Hall, or explore The Amazing Body Gallery at The Health Museum.
Nature and Outdoors
When you’ve maxed out on man-made museums, admire the marvels made by mother nature. Go for a jog around Memorial Park or escape the city sprawl in its forested hiking trails. Bring your pup into the new year on the right paw by taking them to the dog park at Buffalo Bayou Park, or hike along the water at Buffalo Bayou. If you want to swim in a piece of Houston history, find your way to Emancipation Park. Reflect over the past decade at McGovern Lake or the Japanese Garden in Hermann Park. While you’re there, catch a performance at Miller Outdoor Theater.
Giving Back
After self-betterment, turn around and focus on bettering the community. Before leaving Hermann Park, volunteer for Hermann Park Conservancy by helping to maintain the 445-acre space. If you want to make a difference while spending a night out, visit OKRA Charity Saloon and buy a round. All proceeds are donated to charity! Even if you don’t reach your ideal self by the end of the year, you’ll be that many steps closer to reaching them by the end of the decade.
